What this site does
Before you hand over a deposit on a used car, you should know what it actually is. VinCheckColorado.com takes the 17-character VIN and shows you the specs, safety equipment, crash-test ratings and open recall campaigns for that vehicle, free and without an account. Then it points you to a full history report for the things a decode cannot see: title brands, salvage records and odometer readings.
Why Colorado
Each state titles, inspects and registers vehicles under its own rules, and the paperwork buyers run into is different everywhere. This site is built around Colorado buyers: the pages explain where the VIN sits on the car, what the Colorado DMV expects after a purchase, and why a title from another state is often the real risk.
Where the data comes from
- The VIN itself. Manufacturer, plant, model year and the check digit are encoded in the number, and we verify the check digit on every lookup.
- NHTSA vPIC. Specs and equipment come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public decoder.
- NHTSA recalls and crash ratings. These are published by make, model and year, not by individual VIN, so they describe the model rather than one particular car.
- Third-party history reports. Title, brand and salvage data come from a separate provider and are only shown in the paid report.
How the site makes money
The decode is free. When you choose to buy a full history report, you are sent to a third-party provider, and we earn a commission if you purchase. The price to you is the same either way. We do not sell your data and we do not run ads.
What we are not
VinCheckColorado.com is an independent, privately owned website. It is not the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles, it is not a government agency, and it is not endorsed by one. It is also not an Approved NMVTIS Data Provider. For titles, registrations and anything official, go to the DMV directly. A report, free or paid, never replaces a mechanical inspection.
